Understanding Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)

Spinal AVM is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that disrupts  normal circulation by creating a direct connection between arteries and veins. When AVM occurs in the spinal cord, it is known as Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation.

Disrupted Blood Flow

In a healthy system, blood flows from arteries to veins through capillaries. In AVM, capillaries are bypassed, causing high-pressure blood to rush into veins.

Risk of Aneurysm & Rupture

The increased pressure can lead to aneurysm formation (bulging of vessel walls). If ruptured, it may cause hemorrhaging and severe complications.

Moksha is caring, focused and a great surgeon. I interviewed another doctor before finding her and wasn’t at all impressed with him. Moksha on the other hand made me feel that I was important and that she would work on my problem, which she did and finally after about three years of pain and suffering I no longer have the pain that kept me housebound. I’m starting to feel better and I’ve even started walking around again. Soon I’ll be up to a mile each time I walk around and then two or three miles at a time. I am so happy that I “found” her to be my surgeon. If you have a chance ask for her help. You won’t be disappointed!

Dr. Ranasinghe is very conservative in her approach and wants to ensure all options have been exhausted before doing spine surgery. She opted for physical therapy and injection. So far I am doing MUCH better and have not had to do surgery.

From the moment I met her, Dr. Ranasinghe put me right at ease. She's got such a warm, caring personality and you can just tell she really knows her stuff as a spine surgeon but spoke in very simple terms so I could understand. She was very thorough in explaining my MRI results and all the different surgery options and went over the pros and cons of everything, but never pressured me into a decision. In the end I opted for surgery a year later. Now, I'm almost pain-free for the first time in ages because of one amazing spine surgeon. Dr. Ranasinghe is the whole package - super smart, caring as can be, amazing spine surgery and has the best bedside manner. Thank you!!"

A spinal AVM is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the spine that disrupts normal blood flow, which can lead to symptoms like pain, weakness, and nerve damage.

Common symptoms include back pain, leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, and loss of bladder control. In severe cases, it can lead to paralysis.

Diagnosis is made using MRI or CT angiography to visualize the abnormal blood vessels. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) may also be used for detailed assessment.

Treatment includes surgical removal, embolization (blocking abnormal blood vessels), or radiosurgery. The approach depends on the AVM’s size, location, and symptoms.

Yes, untreated SAVMs can lead to nerve damage, spinal cord compression, and permanent weakness or paralysis due to abnormal blood flow disrupting the spine’s function.

Not always. Smaller, asymptomatic AVMs may be treated with non-surgical methods like embolization or radiosurgery. Surgery is typically recommended if there is significant neurological impairment or risk of bleeding.
