Types of Scoliosis Explained

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine develops an abnormal sideways curve, often forming an “S” or “C” shape. It’s most commonly diagnosed in childhood or adolescence but can progress into adulthood. The severity of the curvature can vary, from mild (around 10 degrees) to severe (over 100 degrees). Curves greater than 30 degrees typically require medical evaluation for treatment to prevent further complications. If you’re seeking a more in-depth diagnosis or have concerns about your scoliosis condition, a virtual second opinion from a trusted spine specialist in Los Angeles can help guide your next steps.

Moksha is caring, focused and a great surgeon. I interviewed another doctor before finding her and wasn’t at all impressed with him. Moksha on the other hand made me feel that I was important and that she would work on my problem, which she did and finally after about three years of pain and suffering I no longer have the pain that kept me housebound. I’m starting to feel better and I’ve even started walking around again. Soon I’ll be up to a mile each time I walk around and then two or three miles at a time. I am so happy that I “found” her to be my surgeon. If you have a chance ask for her help. You won’t be disappointed!

Dr. Ranasinghe is very conservative in her approach and wants to ensure all options have been exhausted before doing spine surgery. She opted for physical therapy and injection. So far I am doing MUCH better and have not had to do surgery.

From the moment I met her, Dr. Ranasinghe put me right at ease. She's got such a warm, caring personality and you can just tell she really knows her stuff as a spine surgeon but spoke in very simple terms so I could understand. She was very thorough in explaining my MRI results and all the different surgery options and went over the pros and cons of everything, but never pressured me into a decision. In the end I opted for surgery a year later. Now, I'm almost pain-free for the first time in ages because of one amazing spine surgeon. Dr. Ranasinghe is the whole package - super smart, caring as can be, amazing spine surgery and has the best bedside manner. Thank you!!"

Scoliosis often shows uneven shoulders, hips, or waist, and the ribs may stick out on one side when bending forward. A professional exam with imaging is needed to confirm a true spinal curve.

If the curve is more than about 10 degrees or you’re noticing it progressing, pain developing, or difficulties with balance or breathing, you should see a specialist. Regular checks help track changes over time.

Yes. Curvature can worsen or become painful later in life due to degenerative changes, nerve irritation, or strain on muscles. Adults may feel back pain, stiffness, or fatigue more than children do.

Mild curves may only need monitoring or physical therapy, moderate ones may benefit from bracing, and significant progressive curves may be treated surgically. The choice depends on severity, symptoms, and age.

Modern surgical approaches aim to correct the curve while preserving mobility. You can often return to most activities after recovery, though heavy impact sports may be restricted initially. A surgeon will tailor activity plans to your situation.

Yes. A second opinion can confirm your diagnosis, explore non-surgical options, and ensure surgery is truly necessary. It helps you feel confident in your care decisions.
